The applications offered here come in the form of zipped files/folders sets(packs). These applications require only a web browser to run. Of course, packs must be installed on a server before.
Some simplistic explanations for novices :
- A server is a computer that runs 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. The main benefits of a server are its robustness, availability, speed to answer a query, the large size of its memory (RAM and ROM), and (for Ecology) its low energy consumption.
- The internet is a huge worldwide network allowing the interconnection of all servers and clients (eg you).
- Your computer, connected to internet (wired, wireless, or any other means), allows you to access to billions of billions of information stored in servers.
The server can be local or remote.
Installing an apache server and sql server locally has become a breeze. Depending on the operating system (OS) you are using, you can consult the following pages for that :
- XAMPP (for Linux)
- WampServer (for Windows)
If you use a local server, your application will be available on the host machine, even without internet connection (offline, once local servers started).
For a remote server, you need a web hosting provider, free or paid, according to your requirements. Free.fr is a good example of free hosting : PHP 5 and MySQL 5 are offered without any surcharge if you choose it as ISP (Internet Service Provider). You can create your interactive intenet site within 48 hours, with an url like « my_site.free.fr » (see this page for details). Enjoy, you will not pay more money !
Paid hosts abound on the web. One can find excellent from € 6.00 per month, with a one-year subscription, including domain name. Do not hesitate, go for it !
Using a remote server allows your application to be available from anywhere in the world, on any machine connected to the Internet.
